Who May File a Claim Against GKN Aerospace?

JCL Law Firm, APC is currently hearing from people who live, work, run or own a business, or otherwise spent time in Garden Grove during the time of the GKN Aerospace and helping them determine if they have the option to file a claim. If you have experienced health problems, uncovered evacuation costs, or business interruptions since the chemical leak, you might be eligible.

The three main types of potential Garden Grove chemical leak clients are:

  1. Displaced residents: You may be able to demand compensation for costs associated with the hardships and inconvenience of the mandatory multiday evacuation. If you are a homeowner, let us know, as your home may have experienced a drop in property value due to this incident.
  2. Local business owners: If your business lost income due to the interruption caused by the evacuation, you may have a claim.
  3. Injured parties: Anyone who was exposed to the chemical vapors leaking from the GKN Aerospace facility and has since been diagnosed with a serious illness linked to such chemical exposure should explore their legal options with our team.

Details of the GKN Aerospace Chemical Leak

Beginning on May 21, 2026, a chemical storage tank at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove began to overheat and leak. Methyl methacrylate (MMA), which is a highly volatile and flammable chemical, was escaping the tank and creating a catastrophic failure risk that experts warned could trigger a massive BLEVE. Mandatory evacuations were announced and impacted six areas in Orange County (Garden Grove, Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Westminster, and Buena Park), forcing more than 50,000 residents to leave their homes for up to six days. Although the evacuations would eventually be called off without an explosion occurring, the financial damage had already been done, and it is still not definitely known if residents had been exposed to unsafe chemical compounds in the air.

What Can MMA Exposure Do?

Someone who has been exposed to MMA vapor may experience these symptoms:

  • Respiratory issues like coughing and labored breathing
  • Eye and skin irritation
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness and headaches

Many of the symptoms might not have been immediately noticeable, either. If you lived or worked in Garden Grove and had to evacuate, and you experienced any of the above symptoms days later, it could be tied to the chemical leak. Additionally, long-term exposure symptoms like kidney damage and pregnancy risks may also occur.

What to Do If You Think You Have a Claim

If you think you might have a claim to file against GKN Aerospace, you should do this right now:

  1. Get medical care: If you have not done so already, see a medical professional for an evaluation and let them know that you were required to evacuate due to the MMA leak.
  2. Record everything: Write down your experiences since the chemical leak and evacuations, being sure to detail any health issues that could be related.
  3. Save your receipts: Save receipts and bills for any expense related to the evacuation. If you own a business, make copies of your losses related to business interruptions.
  4. Call our firm: Dial (619) 848-3368 before you give a statement or sign anything from any party related to the GKN Aerospace chemical leak in Garden Grove.

Why Should GKN Aerospace Be Held Liable?

The catastrophic MMA vapor leak at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove directly indicates that the company failed to uphold its duty of care to the community around it. While the exact cause of the chemical storage tank failure is still pending investigation, such as the one being headed by the Orange County District Attorney, it remains true that GKN Aerospace and its parent company, the UK-based Melrose Industries PLC, were in control of the facility and were required to maintain it in a safe and responsible manner. By seemingly failing to do so, the companies could be found liable for any losses experienced by affected parties, such as evacuated residents and business owners.

To make the situation even more frustrating to those impacted by the chemical leak, it was recently revealed that GKN Aerospace’s Garden Grove facility had received at least 10 OSHA citations since 2018 related to equipment inspections and safety procedures. Further investigations could uncover the details of those citations and help firmly establish that the company was unduly negligent in the way it maintained the facility. In other words, it might be proven through investigations and legal action that the chemical leak that did so much harm in Garden Grove reasonably could have been entirely prevented had GKN Aerospace taken safety and site maintenance more seriously.
